Homework
Homework will be unfinished assignments from our daily work. It is important for you to take an active part in your child’s work. Good homework and study habits are very important, and now is the time to instill this in your child. Set a time aside for daily working, studying, and/ or reading with your child. Guide your child to set up papers neatly and to do his/her best. Review the work upon completion. If you should find any mistakes, encourage your child to locate and correct the errors on his/her own. Help your child complete study guides for tests and quiz him/ her to help prepare. Do not “cram” for tests and wait until the last minute to assist with studying. Tests are usually announced a week or so prior to the actual date. Make use of each night to study.
Grading Policy
All assignments are due the day after they were assigned, unless specified otherwise by the teacher. So, if the assignment was not finished in class, it is to be taken home for homework.
If an assignment is not completed by its due date, your son/daughter has two freebie late passes that he/she may use in order to turn in the assignment the next day without penalty. Any late assignment will earn an immediate 50%. We strive to remember to look at agendas for highlighted assignments nightly. Any assignment that your child receives a 70% of less on, can be redone for an average grade. All work that is redone must be handed in by the Friday prior to the quarter ending.
PowerSchool will be the best way to keep up with your students’ progress as you can see grades upon entry. You also will be able to see Missing Work (marked with a M) or Absent work (marked with a AB). Your child is entitled to full credit for any work missed due to absence, as long as it’s made up within a reasonable amount of time. If the absent work is not turned in with the reasonable time period, the zeros stay as the assignment grade.
Please check your child’s Agenda page daily. We use it each day to record all assignments and to indicate what has been completed and what is homework. We will also use it for reminder notes regarding class activities and to indicate test dates. At this time, your child is required to have you sign the agenda page weekly (will be checked on Monday’s). Keeping track of his/ her homework is an important part of being responsible in school. However, if a child begins to slip and not turn assignments in, nightly monitoring by teachers and parents will become necessary.
Your child has a folder that has been designated a “Take Home Folder”. All graded work and notes will come home on Friday’s. Please watch for this on Friday’s and guide your child to empty its contents for you to sort through.

When visiting West Utica, always have your picture ID. You will need to present it before entering the building. Our office staff will ask you to sign in and wear a visitor’s pass. This is a measure of safety for the children in the building. We appreciate your cooperation and support. If you are going to pick your child up early, please send in a note to let us know. You will be asked to sign your child out in the office.
